Lustrous Choice AU 1850 Mormon $5. 1850 Deseret Assay Office. Mormon $5.00 Gold. Kagin-5. Rarity-5+. AU-58 NGC. This bright lemon-yellow Mormon half eagle is lustrous, nicely struck, and all but unmarked to the unaided eye. From different dies than that for the 1849 issue, as described farther on. The clasped hands motif is sharp throughout, as is the reverse eye and miter, as well as all the lettering and numerals. Among the top dozen grading events for this issue in the NGC Census, and notable as such. This exceptional Mormon $5 gold piece should draw plenty of action when it comes up for bids. Tenacity alone may be what it takes to win this attractive Mormon $5, so prepare to be in for the long haul if you plan to go home with this prize.

The dies of the 1850 Mormon $5 offered here, although identical in legends and motifs, are widely different from the dies of the prior year’s coinage of 1849. On the 1850 obverse, the clasped hands and cuffs are noticeably better defined and differently shaped than the earlier type, and the lettering is smaller and better spaced on the 1850 issue as well. On the reverse of the 1850 coin, the miter has three distinct points, and there is a halo floating between the miter and the all-seeing eye. A circle of 9 stars now surrounds the central devices. As noted, the same utilitarian legends are present on both issues.
Obverse: clasped hands, date 1850 below, G.S.L.C.P.G. and FIVE DOLLARS around.
Reverse: bishop’s miter and all-seeing eye at center, HOLINESS TO THE LORD around.
Edge: Plain.
Die alignment: 190 degrees.
NGC Census: 6; 6 finer (MS-62 finest).
