EugËne Grasset’s Napoleonic Century design (see No. 78) "created something of a sensation in the United States, and encouraged the . . . magazine to launch a contest for more Napoleon posters. Many leading poster artists of the day sent entries . . . even Toulouse-Lautrec. . . . The winning entry came from Luc MÈtivet and depicted Napoleon at his coronation standing regally in his robes, with the pyramids, the Arch of Triumph and the Vendome column behind him while the foreground holds two circular medallions showing a triumphant equestrian figure of Napoleon at Austerlitz and a defeated one of him at Waterloo, the two connected by an eagle with spread wings” (Berthon & Grasset, pp. 28 & 29).
