The lot features a wonderful set of fully top beaded moccasins attributed to the Plains Native American Indian tribe of the Lakota Sioux People and dating to circa 1890-1900’s. The moccasins show an Indian tanned hide construction and feature the immensely rare “split beaded tongues” adorned with hand rolled tin jingle cone dangles. The set shows a traditional geometric design with glass trade seed beads in chalk white, red, padre sky blue, butterscotch yellow, and semi-transparent dark blue. The set shows a fancy beaded top edge along the ankle in padre sky blue. The set shows a rawhide parfleche sole base and overall are in good condition with little bead loss. This is truly a very colorful and attractive artful set of moccasins with rare split tongue design. The moccasins are from the Ben Thompson Collection. Each measures 9.5”L and 3.75”W. A few similar split tongue design Sioux moccasins have sold at auction including: Skinner Auction sold a set for $2,952, Old Barn Auction sold a set in their 10/28/2006 for $3,680, Cowan’s Auctions sold a set in their 3/26/2010 sale for $3,055, and High Noon Manitou Galleries sold a set in their August in Santa Fe Auction 8/12/2004 for $3,407.50.
