Ink and watercolour on paper; hanging scroll. Featuring standing eagle on rock. Signed and attr. Li Kuchan (Chinese, 1899-1983) and inscribed with 1 artist seal. 66 x 41 cm. Li Kuchan was Chinese painter known for combining Western techniques with traditional Chinese styles. A specialist in bird-and-flower paintings, Li executed his works using a spontaneous brushwork and simplified forms. Born in 1898 in Gaotang County, China, he went on to study Western techniques under Xu Beihong and Chinese ink-wash painting under Qi Baishi. In 1926, Li began a career as an art teacher, later holding a position at the Central Academy of Fine Arts for over 30 years. During the 1960s, he was targeted as reactionary professor by the government and jailed for a brief period of time. Li died in 1983 in Beijing, China. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in British Columbia, and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, among others.
