This fine model is the work of one of the leading sculptors of the 17th century, François Gerardo. His monument to Louis xiv was erected in 1699 on the place Vendome in Paris, but was destroyed during the revolution, in September 1792, with only a few fragments now in the louver. It is only through the various surviving models that we can gain some idea of the appearance of the monument.
Dressed as a roman emperor, Louis xiv is seated astride his horse. His hair is full and curly. He wears his royal armor and his cape is set back behind his one shoulder. his armor has details of a fleur de lef etched on his ribs and the pleated metal falls down around his waist for extra protection. He holds his royal cane in his hand and points forward suggesting that he is ready to move. His magnificent horse is wild with emotion. The horse’s mane is flying in the air and the horses nostrils are flared with anxiousness. The mouth is open suggesting the horse is letting out a wild neigh while he rams his hoof in to the ground with excitement. His nostrils and mouth are highlighted with a gold patina. The contours of the muscles on the horse are amazing with life like detail. Louis the xiv facial expression is surprisingly calm; he is safe and protected in his royal armor. His horse even has a beautiful detailed saddle as well as hair tie for his tail. Classical reminiscences and the idealization characteristic of the academic schools are combined with exaggerated solemnity and a glorification of the man who was known as the sun king. This beautiful heavy bronze sculpture is signed by the artist Gerardo; it is mounted on a black marble base and was casted using the lost wax method.
