Mixed media, abstract composition. Executed 1963. Signed by John Richard Reppen (Canadian, 1933-1964) on near lower right margin. John Richard Reppen, "Jack," artist, painter. Studying design at the Ontario College of Art in the evening, he was a free-lance cartoonist for the Toronto Star 1952-64 and art director for the Prudential Insurance Co, Toronto, 1952-62. From 1959 he devoted himself to his painting, exhibiting regularly in solo and group shows, and created several murals on commission. Travel - to Mexico (1961, 1963) and northern France (1962) - was an important source of Reppen's imagery. His best works have a strong feeling for surface and texture, with an almost relief quality, being often built on a matrix of gesso, with collage elements and incised surfaces. PROVENANCE: The Arwin Galleries, Detroit, Michigan, United States; thence by descent.
