(Paramount, 1968) In Roman Polanski’s masterpiece of gothic horror in a contemporary time setting, a struggling actor played by John Cassavetes sells his soul (and his wife Rosemary’s womb, played by Mia Farrow) to the devil in exchange for success on the stage. In the scene where Rosemary is drugged and offered to Satan for rape and impregnation, her nude husband mounts her and is then replaced by Satan himself through a transition involving this suit of leather and metallic scales, and patches of animal hair. An extremely heavy and elaborately constructed costume weighing in at 12 pounds, with Western Costume sewn-in label marked “John Cassavetes” and #2567-1; each scale and patch of hair is individually hand-sewn in place, requiring an extraordinary amount of labor to complete. Brilliantly designed by Anthea Sylbert, and the transformation process is perfected through Allan Snyder’s makeup and the effects photography of Farciot Edouart. Though not on screen very long, this is easily one of the most unusual and important horror costumes to ever be offered for sale. Condition Very Fine as worn in film, with virtually no damage or signs of aging.
