The lock plate is marked "J. ROOP" with a light engraving on the lock plate and hammer. Fixed sights, with the octagon rifled barrel gauging at approximately .50 caliber. The ramrod pipes, forend cap, trigger guard, patch box, and crescent buttplate are brass, with a light engraving on the patch box. Double set triggers and full length stock. In Frank Sellers' book AMERICAN GUNSMITHS lists a John Roop has having worked in Allentown, Pennsylvania, from 1766 to 1775 with his specialty being flintlock Kentucky rifles. (We are unclear if this is the correct maker, read ahead). On page 175 of thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in its Golden Age, Kindig points out that one should not confuse J. Roop with much earlier maker John Rupp as he infers that Roops' work as inferior to Rupps' work.
BBL: 38 1/2 inch octagon
Stock: maple
Gauge: 50
Finish: brown
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Very good. The rifle has a smooth brown-gray patina with some very scattered minor spotting. The brass has a polished appearance. The forearm has a few repairs and a missing sliver of wood on the right side near the muzzle, otherwise the wood is fine with some minor handling marks, a putty filled repair near the stock toe, and a couple small cracks. The patch box has a replacement screw. Mechanically fine.
