Interesting plains rifle with brass tack stock, lock marked “C. Bird & Bros.” Barrel shows traces of original maker’s signature, now illegible. The rifle measures 45-1/2” with a 31” barrel of approx. .50 caliber with faint traces of rifling, either shot out or smoothed out for buckshot. The gun was originally in flintlock, converted to percussion. The stock shows old tacks in a star pattern on the right side, several other areas of tacking which are probably done by a white man. The information listed on tag states that this gun was purchased in 1935 by a man who later moved to California, sold to known Northern California collector LarryShelton to well known collector Gordon Matson. Marked on butt beneath buttplate “H.S.F.”An interesting transition Kentucky to Plains rifle that went West, probably with the Mountain men. Dr. Sterling Fenncollection. Est: $750 - $1,500
