This is an exceptional authentic original Immigrant Trunk dating to circa 1836. The piece shows a very fine solid wood construction having square iron early nails and rare full cut wood with wonderful art appeal blacksmith fashioned wrought iron hardware and supports. Most early immigrant trunks of the 19th Century show a plainer construction with this example having a very unique and immensely detailed iron work. Along with the finely crafted iron work shows a dove tail solid wood construction with dome top along with two ornate wrought iron twisted drop handles. The trunk shows all the original early polychrome painted design including the hand written, “ADW” and then “ADW – 1836”. The piece shows the original locking mechanism with the original large cast skeleton key. The top shows a chased engraved round knob. The piece shows an overall good condition for its early age and taking into consideration that it traveled many thousands of miles to secure this hopeful Immigrant’s most prized possessions. The lock is seized. The piece measures 41" wide, 23" deep, and 25 3/4" tall.
