July 5 on Dodge House Hotel and Billard Parlor letter head reading" "Write you in haste as I just came here yesterday ( the 4th) to see the only bull fight held in America (see papers) two men killed here not an hour ago within ten feet of me. The hardest place you ever saw over 300 cow boys in town and all shooting You never heard or seen of such scene in your life. I am scouting with a cavalry troop from the fort (Ft. Dodge). The saloons and streets are just riddled with balls and I'm told they kill a man or two every day, I tthought I might run accross Uncle Bernard here as it is near Colorado but have not been able to find trace of him. I advertised in all the papers in Pueblo but have not been able to hear any thing of him. Give all the folks my love will write you when I get back to Wichita. The famous Dodge House was the largest and fanciest hotel in town, located on the corner of First and Central Ave. Opened in 1872 as the Essington, The name was soon changed to Dodge House when Essington was shot and killed by his cook, the new owners George Cox and F.W. Boyd. Room 24 was occupied and used as a dentistry in 1878 by the infamous Doc Holiday. His friend Wyatt Earp resided down the hall during his time as a lawman. A fascinating letter, giving better than a movie, of how it really was in the "Wild and Wicked Cattle town of the West", as nick named by the New York City Herald. From the Gary Helin collection.
