TLS, one page, 4.5 x 7, 13, Hanover Terrace, Regent’s Park letterhead, September 2, 1943. Letter to Eustace B. Griffiths, in full: “Very many thanks for your friendly letter. Perhaps that ‘conspicuously indolent’ goes a little too far. He was mentally indolent and his generalship was poor. W. E. Woodward’s book seems to me sound and scholarly.” In very good condition, with two creased corners, and light irregular toning. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Wells is likely referring to Meet General Grant, a 1928 biography of U. S. Grant by Woodward.
