You are bidding on a circa. WWI Adams & Westlake railroad lantern. The Adams and Westlake Co. was founded in 1857 in Chicago. Initially the company manufactured and sold railroad supplies, but by 1897 had diversified greatly. This particular lantern was called "Adlake Reliable" and is a tall globe (5.5") lantern. It features a specially designed handle that can be made to stay upright when the lantern is put down. The chimney of the lantern read "The Adams & Westlake Co./ New York, Chicago, Philla." and "Adlake Reliable". Around the lid of the lantern is a series of Patent dates, starting with May 6, 1908. The latest date is April 1, 1913. This lantern has a red globe. Also on the lid, at the base of the chimney, is "G.N. RY"--Great Northern Railway. Interestingly, this lantern has a Dietz globe. Dietz was a competing maker of lanterns and had been founded prior to the Civil War. The globe reads "Vulcan/ New York/ Dietz/ U.S.A." The "Vulcan" model globe was produced by Dietz from around the turn of the Century until about 1944. The red lanterns were generally used to signal "stop" and would have been used at a tower or flag station. Sometimes red lanterns were hung on the rear of a tender or on the end of a caboose as a rear marker. This lantern and globe are in good condition. The lantern has great patina and some rusting along the bottom and underneath the chimney. The globe is without cracks, but is chipped at the bottom to compensate for wick trimmer--chip NOT visible when globe is in lantern. The lantern measures 16", base to top of handle, and 6.75" diameter at the base.
