American composer of avant-garde music (born 1929) who is noted for his unusual timbres, alternative forms of notation, and extended instrumental and vocal techniques. Two items: an AMQS on an off-white 5.25 x 8.25 sheet of University of Pennsylvania letterhead, signed and inscribed in black ink, "With best wishes to Mr. Laurence Hilonowitz—George Crumb, March 22, 1978," who crisply pens three bars of music, titling it above, "'Echoes of Time and the River,' (1967," and adding "(Very slow)"; and an ALS, one page, 5.5 x 8.5, University of Pennsylvania letterhead, May 29, 1979, addressed to Don Sebesky and offering instructions on how to get a photo of himself, "If you would then send it on to me, I would be happy to inscribe it for you." The AMQS is nicely double-matted and framed with a photo of Crumb to an overall size of 18.25 x 15.25. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope for the letter, addressed in his own hand and signed along the top edge.
