Watercolor and ink on paper, featuring trees, signed and attr. Guan Shanyue (Chinese, 1912-2000), inscribed with 1 artist seal, dated 1978, 99 x 52.5 cm. Guan Shanyue was a Chinese painter known for his sensitive depictions of foggy mountain summits. Born on October 25, 1912 in Yangjiang, China, developed an interest in painting at a young age. In 1933, the artist graduated from the Guangzhou College of Education. Until 1940, Gao Jianfu, the great Lingnan painter, taught Guan the art of Chinese painting. In 1941, Guan began traveling through Western China, where he researched ancient Buddhist mural paintings and painted Buddhist holy sites. During the latter half of his career, the artist held a number of teaching posts at prestigious institutions. He died on July 3, 2000 in Shenzhen, China. Today, Guan’s works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as well as the Guan Shanyue Art Museum in Shenzhen which was founded to preserve the artist’s legacy.
