Massive sculpture bust. Frederick Volck was a German-Confederate American 1833-1891. This bronze bust statue was executed of then President Grant in the same manner of General Lee; which Volck created in 1863. This bronze was sculpted in 1869 when General Grant became President Grant. General Lee, the state of Virginia, as well as Volck were grateful on how General Grant treated General Lee and his men after they surrended. at Appomattox, VA in 1865. The statue of General Grant is him in his old army uniform. This statue was a way for the Southern people to say thank you to General Grant and hope President Grant would help the Southern People in the Reconstruction Period of Grant's term in office. It is recorded in President Grants diary that General Lee made several trips to Washington, DC to talk with President Grant and one of these trips the bust of President Grant was given to him by General Lee. 18" x 12" x 8". Total Weight: 50 lbs. Very good condition. The bronze is signed and dated on the backside "FREDERICK VOLCK, 1869, RICHMOND, VA" and on the front side: "U. S. GRANT". It's interesting to note that the General Lee Bronze is just slightly higher than the General Grant bronze.
