This fraternal sword was manufactured by the G. F. Foster & Son Co., of Chicago, Ill. and quite elaborate. The sword was made for the Ancient Order of United Workmen in the late 19th century. The AOUW was one of the first fraternal benefit societies to organize insurance benefits for sickness, accident, death and burial services after the civil war. This sword is 35 1/2 in. overall length and the blade is 27 in long. It is numbered "777" on the ricasso along with the name of the owner "C. C. Ostrander" and the "A.O.U.W." on the other side of the blade. The grip is of walnut while the pommel is a brass knight's helmet. The chain that joins the pommel to the guard is missing. The guard is cast brass with a cross and two anchors on either side at the tip. The scabbard is as elegant and more elaborate than the sword itself; The throat is of cast brass with two knights and a skeletal hand. There three mount rings and a heavy cast brass drag at the bottom. A union shield appears mid-shaft on the scabbard. City: State: Date: HWAC# 51145
