36. For Your Eyes Only, First Edition inscribed by Ian Fleming. Fleming, Ian. For Your Eyes Only: Five Secret Occasions in the Life of James Bond. Jonathan Cape, London, (1960). Octavo. First Edition, first impression. Inscribed in ink on the front free endpaper, “For John, To hack about! From Ian.” The bibliophile John Hayward was one of Fleming’s closest friends. They were neighbors in the fashionable Cheyne Walk area in London, with Fleming having the apartment above Hayward and his roommate T. S. Eliot. In 1955 Fleming took over ownership (from Lord Kelmsley for a modest figure) of The Book Collector, of which John Hayward was the editor, along with Percy Muir. “…typically, Fleming left the work to others – chiefly to its totally unpaid editor, Hayward…Fleming never wrote for it or really directly its policy [though he did help get funding to provide for its future]. All the same, the magazine was ‘his’. He was very proud of it…” [Pearson, The Life of Ian Fleming, p. 240]. Original black boards, spine lettered in gilt, eye motif in white on front board. Pictorial dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping; light smudging of jacket panels. Near Fine. $20,000 – $30,000
