Fine Winchester Third Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle
This fine Winchester Model 1876 "Centennial Model" Lever Action Rifle was manufactured in 1884. The rifle has a casehardened receiver, hammer, loading lever, forearm cap and crescent steel buttplate. The barrel and magazine have a blue finish. The dust cover and loading gate are niter blue. The walnut stock and forearm are varnished. The receiver has the integral dust cover rail and dust cover with seriated edges. The barrel has a "Rocky Mountain" front sight with large nickel-silver blade and a adjustable folding leaf rear sight. The buttplate has a sliding brass trap and the rifle is complete with the original four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S- REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860.". In two lines ahead of the rear sight. "CAL. 40-60" is stamped on the top barrel flat ahead of the receiver. The upper receiver tang has the final, third style "MODEL 1876" marking with foliate letters. The bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is inscribed "40-60". Fine. The rifle retains nearly 70% of the original blue and 30% casehardened finish. The barrel has most of the blue finish with light o moderate edge wear. The blue finish on the magazine is thin along the bottom. The case colors on the exposed portions of the receiver have faded to a smooth silver-gray patina. Substantial amounts of case colors are visible on the protected areas of the receiver. The receiver sides and side plates are smooth with sharp edges and have no scratches or pitting. The loading gate and dust cover have about 70% of the niter blue finish. The forearm cap, hammer and loading lever have strong case colors. The buttplate has a silver patina with some small spots of age discoloration. The markings on the barrel and receiver are crisp. The stock and forearm are in fine condition with about 80% of the original varnish finish. Wear is limited to some minor handling marks. This is a fine example of a highly desirable casehardened receiver Winchester 1876 "Centennial Model" Lever Action Rifle.
