Fine Pair Provincial English Perc. Target Pistols
Auction Location:

16600 Aston Street
Irvine, CA
Very Fine Pair of Provincial English Percussion Target Pistols, by Beckley of Oxford, each pistol having a browned 8-1/2'' octagonal twist barrel of .54'' bore with 13-groove rifling, small notched rear sight and front silver bead, double platinum breech bands and platinum plug. The locks are case colored and engraved with subtle triangle bordered floral and vine patterns which follow to the upper tangs, polished blue triggerguards and ''KA'' initialed finials; hammers are early percussion period stylized dolphins with half-cock notches and sliding safety latches. The lacquered English walnut stocks have medium figure grain patterns with contoured silver nose caps and barrel wedge plates; grips have finely executed and proportioned flat diamond bordered checkering with rose engraved silver bases inlaid in the scalloped grip caps; upper wrists have very small vacant rectangular silver initial shields; ramrod tail pipes have a polished blue finish matching the triggerguards and lower tangs; ramrods are ebony with brass tips and ferrules (Note: Ramrods appear to be by the same maker with one being fractionally longer than the other and having a slightly different tip and ferrule style). Pistols weigh in the range of 31-32 ozs. each. Overall condition of the pair is very fine, appearing generally well maintained over time. Mainsprings are strong, muzzles are sharp; bores have distinct rifling with brown oxidation; locks have a cleaned silver patina with traces of color on the hammers. Blued finishes remain 50% with light oxidation. Stock lacquer covers earlier scratches, powder marks and dents, wedge plates have hammer marks, and a small section of the stock is chipped from one pistol in front of the lockplate. Est.: $2,200-$2,800/pair. (Antique)
