Volcanic No. 1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company between 1857 and 1860. Oliver Winchester reorganized the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company as the New Haven Arms Company in April 1857. The "VOLCANIC" markings were eliminated from firearms manufactured after April 1857 by the New Haven Arms Co. The pistol has a blued octagon barrel with integral, spring-loaded magazine. The barrel has an iron front sight and is roll-stamped with the legend: "NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB.14.1854" in a single line. The brass receiver has a fixed, dovetail mounted, rear sight. The hammer, trigger and loading lever have a casehardened finish. The two-piece walnut grips have a high polish varnish finish. The serial number, "1487", is stamped on the left side of the frame beneath the grips and on the inside of each grip. All of the visible serial numbers match.
BBL: 3 1/2 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 31
Finish: blue/brass
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 1487
Condition: Very fine. The pistol retains 70% of the original blue finish. Substantial amounts of the original blue finish are present on the barrel and magazine; the balance of the barrel and magazine have a very attractive, plum blue, patina. The brass receiver is in very fine condition. The side plate edges are tight; the receiver has never been polished and has a mellow patina. Wear is limited to scattered and very insignificant handling marks. The hammer, loading lever and trigger have a silver gray patina with strong traces of the original blue and casehardened finish. The grips are in fine condition and have nearly all of the original varnish. Wear is limited to some minor finish loss on the edges of the grip heels and some light dents and scratches. The barrel legend and serial numbers are crisp. This is a very fine example of a New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol.
