Hugo Reinhold Karl Johann Hoppener (pseudonym Fidus) was a famous German symbolist artist of the second half of the 19th - first half of the 20th century. He was a painter and illustrator in Woltersdorf at Erkner near Berlin and was born in 1868 in Luebeck as a son of confectioner. He studied at Luebeck Trade School, in 1887 at Munich Academy, until 1889 under K.W.Diefenbach in Hoellriegelsgreuth near Munich. In 1889-1892 the artist continued his education at Munich Academy under N.Gysis. Afterwards he moved to Berlin with theosophist Huebbe-Schleiden, whose magazine "Sphinx" he illustrated in. From there the artist made many trips to Norway, Switzerland, Italy and Istria. Hugo Hoppener was a skillful and imaginative, although eclectic graphic artist. His late works were influenced by tendentious symbolism. The artist created many ornamental drawings, especially for book decoration, as well as ex-libris, posters and designs. He collaborated with "Jugend" in Munich and with other illustrated magazines.
