Gene Szafran (1941), ?Surrealist? surrealist illustration, mixed media.

Born in Detroit Michigan, Gene Szafran became a renowned illustrator for the country?s most distinguished magazines including "Playboy," "Cosmopolitan," "Penthouse," "McCall's," "Fortune," and ?Bantam Books.? He studied and later taught at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit and also taught at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He then moved to Connecticut as a freelance artist and worked as an illustrator out of New York City. He has personal interests of photography and sculpture that he often incorporates into his distinctive illustrations.
This painting is very stylized and graphic in the way that it is rendered. Its use of hard edged shadows, mixed with an informal balance, make this painting a very original and unique rendering. The bright colors of pink and yellow vibrate against each other, being offset only by the main source of interest, the people. The warm colors give the look and feeling of the heat of summer. This picture is excellently framed in a pink and yellow wood frame that imitates the colors of the painting and enhances the overall appeal. The entire piece, including frame, measures 31.5? x 21.5?. This picture is very desirable and very decorative. Szafran?s artwork continues to increase in worth, making the purchase of his art a valuable investment.
