Factory Engraved Colt New Army /New Navy Double Action Revolver with Factory Letter
The included Colt factory letter confirms the serial number and that although the individual record regarding this revolver could not be found, the records state that the revolver was manufactured circa 1903. Writer believes it to be from the Cuno Helfricht shop, and undoubtedly factory engraved. The sides of the frame feature a well executed scroll engraving on a punch dot background, with the circled Rampant Colt on the left side above the grip. The frame engraving is also adorned with a zigzag line motif in front of the cylinder and above the trigger (left side) which is extended to the top strap. The 6-shot cylinder features scrollwork between the flutes with a zigzag line band motif at the rear. The sides of the barrel at the breech are adorned with wedges of scrollwork which incorporates "COLT. D.A. 38" in a banner on the left side. The top of the barrel has the two line Hartford address/patent dates (1884-1895) surrounded in a fancy engraved border. The trigger guard is adorned with a unique diamond pattern engraving with a line and dot pattern engraved behind the hammer. The non-factory script initials "JNR" are lightly scratched behind the trigger guard. The cylinder latch, frame, and crane are stamped with the same assembly number (971). Fitted with diamond checkered grips.

Very fine. The revolver retains 75% original high polish blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The backstrap has a smooth brown brown. There is some minor pitting (mostly on the barrel and cylinder). The grips are fine with a few minor pressure dents on the bottoms and a few small absent chips on the bottom edge (left panel), along with some minor handling marks. Overall the checkering is crisp. The engraving is clear and crisp. Mechanically fine.
