FRANK REAUGH (1860-1945)
Untitled Male Cardinal
Pastel on grit paper
2-3/4 x 1-1/2 inches (7.0 x 3.8 cm)
Unsigned, authenticated by Mr. Michael R. Grauer

According to Michael R. Grauer, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Art at the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum, and Frank Reaugh expert:

I have examined carefully the scans you sent me of the pastel of the cardinal. Based on the subject and palette, I believe the pastel is a good example of Mr. Reaugh's work from about 1885 to 1895. Mr. Reaugh's mother introduced him to the writings of the naturalist John Burroughs, who was a bird lover. Furthermore, during his life Mr. Reaugh himself remained a staunch naturalist, creating his own zoological, ornithological, and botanical charts. Moreover, Mr. Reaugh's nature and art organization, the Strigidian Club, (which predated the Girl Scouts) included the study of plants, birds, and animals, and was named after the Latin designation for owls ("strigidae").

Throughout his career, Mr. Reaugh portrayed birds, from 1880 pencil drawings, early "grisailles" of owls and chickadees, and later pastels of prairie chickens. Furthermore, Mr. Reaugh often painted vignettes of the Southwestern animals juxtaposed with plants. For example, we have a pastel of a butterfly perched on salvia, very similar in feel to your pastel of the cardinal.

Provenance:
Estate of Reveau Bassett
Acquired from the above by the present ownerCondition Report: Excellent condition.
