Extremely Rare John Armstrong Golden Age Kentucky Rifle
Golden Age Kentucky Rifle signed master gunsmith John Armstrong of Emmittsburg, Maryland. John Armstrong worked as a gunsmith from about 1808 to 1822; his rifles are noted for their high quality and intricate, pierced, brass patch boxes. Kentucky Long Rifle expert Joe Kindig Jr., stated that John Armstrong was one of the high quality makers of Golden Age Rifles and described his workmanship as "magnificent" and his rifle designs as "just about perfection". The rifle has a .45 caliber, full octagon, barrel with the signature "John Armstrong" engraved in script on a brass plate inlaid on the top flat. The barrel has a dovetail mounted brass front sight blade and iron, fixed, rear sight. The lock plate is engraved with Armstrong's script initials "JA". The lock plate has beveled edges with a vertical groove behind the hammer and a pointed tip. The rifle was expertly converted to percussion ignition. The rifle has the double set triggers found on several illustrated examples of Armstrong rifles. The wedge-fastened stock is curly maple with a "tiger stripe" and brass furniture. The stock features a large brass patch box with three piercings decorated with scroll engraving and a carved cheekpiece inlaid with an Eagle and Shield motif engraved on an oval silver plate. The stock is decorated with incised scrollwork behind the cheekpiece. The brass toe-piece and side plate are typical Armstrong designs and are decorated with simple, well executed scroll engraving. Small silver hearts are inlaid in the stock wrist behind the lock and side plate. An oval silver plate is inlaid on the top of the stock wrist between the barrel tang and stock comb. The heel of the buttplate, trigger guard and ramrod pipes have faceted edges. The forearm has a well-formed brass tip. This rifle lacks the elaborate relief carving found on some John Armstrong rifles and is one of his plainer works. However, it has all of the signature elements of John Armstrong's designs identified by Joe Kindig Jr., in his definitive work: "THOUGHTS ON THE KENTUCKY RIFLE IN ITS GOLDEN AGE". This is a great example of a Golden Age Kentucky Rifle by one of the foremost makers.

Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Very good. The rifle has not been cleaned or collector-enhanced and retains all of the untouched patina. The iron barrel and lock have a dark, brown patina with light texture. The signature of the top barrel flat and initials on the lock plate are clear and fully legible. The stock has a dark patina with moderate handling wear; the highly figured, curly maple, tiger stripe is visible thru the patina. The edges of the lock mortise and side plate and the incised carving behind the cheekpiece show moderate handling wear. There is a diagonal crack in the toe of the butt between the buttplate and toe plate and a hair-line crack in the left stock wrist above the trigger guard spur. The buttplate screw is missing. The pierced patch box has a mellow patina and is in very good condition with sharp engraving. The well executed silver oval Eagle and Shield motif and small heart-shaped inlays have a dark patina but remain in very good condition. The hickory ramrod is a period replacement. This is an outstanding example of an extremely rare John Armstrong Kentucky Rifle in untouched original condition. Writer doubts if this wonderful example ever has been seen in the collecting world!
