Estimate: $9500 - 13000
Colt London Model 1849 Pocket revolver manufactured in 1855. The revolver has a factory mahogany case with crimson velvet interior. The barrel and cylinder have a high polish blue finish. The loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened with vivid case colors and the trigger guard and back strap are silver plated. The one-piece grip is nicely figured walnut with a high polish varnish finish. The barrel has a brass cone front sight and the hammer has bordered knurling on the spur. The screws are the round head pattern found on Colt London revolvers and have a fiery niter blue finish. The five-shot cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stage Holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT" above the serial number. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "{ADDRESS COL: COLT/LONDON}" in two lines. "COLTS/PATENT" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. London "CROWN/V" and "CROWN/GP" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel lug in front of the wedge slot and on the rear of the cylinder over each chamber. The full serial number "8364" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap and on the side of the cylinder and top of the loading lever. All of the visible serial numbers match. The case lid is inlaid with a scalloped brass inscription plate. The case has five compartments; one of the compartments has a lid with brass handle. "DIRECTIONS FOR LOADING COLT'S PISTOLS" is glued to the inside of the lid. The case contains: eleven conical lead bullets, a blue L-shaped combination screwdriver/nipple wrench, an empty 500 cap tin of Eley Bros percussion caps for Colt belt and pocket pistols and a small bag-shaped powder flask with top marked: "JAMES DIXON/&SONS/SHEFFIELD" with 2/8, 3/8 and 4/8 dram adjustable charger and split lanyard ring at the base. The flask has a brown lacquer body, gold-plated charger and top and niter blue spring.

The percussion nipples have very minor flash pitting; all of the cylinder safety pins are intact. 98% of the vivid casehardened finish remains on the frame, hammer and loading lever. The trigger guard and back strap have 80% silver-plated finish; most of the wear is concentrated on the grip strap. The screws retain much of the niter blue finish. The grip is excellent with nearly all of the original varnish. The markings are very crisp. The case exterior is fine; wear is limited to a few very minor handling marks. The case interior is fine with bright crimson felt lining and only one small tear in the lining from contact with the revolver front sight. The instruction sheet on the inside of the lid is excellent. The screwdriver/nipple wrench is very good, retains 80% original blue finish. The cap tin is fair. The powder flask is excellent and retains 97% brown lacquer finish on the body with the top and charger retaining 98% gold-plated finish with very crisp markings.
