Exceptional Burnside Civil War Carbine
This is an unissued original example of a Burnside Model 1864 Civil War carbine. This carbine has the distinctive guide screw in the right side of the receiver and the Model 1864 marking that distinguishes the 5th Model Carbines from earlier Burnside Carbines. The carbine has a dull blue finish on the barrel and bright blue tangs, trigger guard, action lever, lever catch and sights. The barrel band, frame, hammer, lock plate, breechblock and buttplate are casehardened. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The barrel is fitted with a pinched blade front sight and two-leaf, folding rear sight graduated to 500 yards. A sling bar and ring are located on the left side of the frame. The top of the barrel is marked: "CAST STEEL 1864". The top of the frame is marked: "BURNSIDE PATENT / MODEL OF 1864" over the serial number, the top of the breechblock is marked with the matching serial number and the lock is marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE RI." behind the hammer. Small, single initial sub-inspector's marks ("W", "B" and "P") are stamped on many components. Two boxed script inspector's cartouches, "STB" and "RKW", are stamped on the left side of the stock wrist. Approximately 43,000 5th Model Burnside Carbines were procured by the U.S. Army from 1863-65. The Burnside carbine was one of larger production Federal cavalry weapons.
