Excellent U.S. Springfield Armory M1 Garand National Match Rifle
This is an excellent example of a very late, Type 2 National Match M1 rifle. These rifles were the very last of the National Match M1 rifle series that some have called a type three National Match as they are fitted with late production 1962-64 dated National Match barrels. The receiver markings are as follows: "U.S. RIFLE, CAL. 30 M1, SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" over the serial number. The right side of the receiver is marked "Z16A over F6528291", and the barrel is marked "SA 7791035 2-63 Y14 with the "P", "M" and small DOD proof and acceptance marks. The front portion of the exposed barrel has the correct "NM" markings on the left side. The various parts are marked as follows: Trigger housing: D28290-12-SA; Trigger guard: stamped unmarked; Hammer: SA 5546008; Safety: SA-1; Bolt: 6528287-SA over A14; Operating Rod: 7790722-SA with "NM" on top of the cocking handle; Bullet Guide: stamped unmarked; Follower Arm: unmarked; Op Rod Catch Assy: single bevel unmarked. The rear sight set is the late post-war National Match version that is marked "BME" and "NM" on the windage knob. The rear sight base is marked "NM2/A" and the aperture is also the late hooded version marked ".595" and "NM" and the front sight is marked "NM/062" on the right side. The gas cylinder is a late post war version marked "NM" on the rear tang with the wide base, high hump gas cylinder lock, and a WWII single slot gas plug. The stock and handguards are the correct walnut versions; they have the late accuracy improvements where the barrel band and front handguard have been unitized (glued together ONLY) and the stock has been glass bedded. The left side of the stock has the DOD acceptance cartouche and a single "P" proof in the pistol grip area. It is complete with a 1942 style unmarked leather sling and brass sling keeper.
