Physicist (1901–1954) who became the first to split the atom and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1938 for his developments in harnessing nuclear power. TLS signed “E. Fermi,” one page, 8.5 x 10.25, The University of Chicago letterhead, June 14, 1949. Letter to Lewis L. Strauss of the US Atomic Energy Commission, in full: "I appreciated very much receiving the authentic text of the remarks that you made to the Joint Committee on the Distribution of Radio–Isotopes." In fine condition, with trimmed top and bottom edges, and a faint block of toning from prior display. Strauss would later be the driving force in the controversial 1954 hearings in which J. Robert Oppenheimer's security clearance was revoked. Fermi, who had worked on the Manhattan Project under Oppenheimer, was among the scientists who testified on his behalf.
