This is an excellent 19th century Chief Powhatan engraved knife with antler handle. The knife is engraved with the image of the chief and corn stalk on one side of the blade. The other side of the blade shows two crossed arrows with a corn stalk and is marked "Chief Powhatan". The knife shows good overall condition. Chief Powhatan, whose proper name was Wahunsenacawh, was the paramount chief of Tsenacommacah an alliance of Algonquin speaking Virginia Indians in the Tidewater region of Virgian at the time the English settlers landed at Jamestown in 1607. Powhatan, also called King or Chief by the English, led the main political and military power facing early colonist and was brother to Opechancanough, who led attacks against the English in 1622 and 1644. He was also the father of Pocahontas. It measures 18" long with a 13" blade. Very fine early knife showing well preserved good condition.
