This tremendous stoneware or faience floor vase from the Arts and Crafts period features incised, glazed floral and organic designs, the portrait of a maiden, and applied handles and exotic birds in keeping with the Japanese influence on the Aesthetic Movement in Britain during the late nineteenth century. It measures 38" high and 18" wide (96.5 and 45.7 cm). We have found no hallmarks, signatures or maker's marks. It was most likely produced in England in the 1870s or 1880s. Its organic, incised and glazed designs and colors suggest it may have been produced by Burmantofts of Yorkshire England, or possibly a competitor influenced by the firm or by the pottery designs of William de Morgan. The condition is excellent, with no visible signs of repair or restoration, and no vislble chips or cracks. There is a small area of white house paint roughly 1/2" across on the neck which can be removed. This item resides in our client's gallery on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City and may be seen in person by appointment.
