This is a rare early example of a Model 70 rifle in 375 H&H Magnum as manufactured in 1937 when the 375 H&H Magnum caliber was first introduced to the line of Winchester Model 70 rifles. In the book "THE MODEL 70 WINCHESTER 1937-1964" by Dean Whitaker refers to these rifles as the "Model 70 375 Type 2." These rifles, like this example, have barrels that resemble the Target barrel in contour and muzzle configuration with a number having been tapped for scope blocks. All barrels will have a ramp front sight. The rifles are very rare and are encountered in the serial number range below 95,000. The left side of the barrel has standard Winchester markings followed by "375 MAGNUM", the first style caliber designation stamp for the 375 H&H Magnum. The right side of the barrel has the two line Winchester address. The Winchester factory proof is stamped on the barrel and receiver at the breech. Hooded ramp front sight, two leaf folding rear sight with the area ahead of the rear sight tapped for scope mounting and the receiver has a Lyman sight. Cloverleaf receiver tang, hinged floor plate and pre-war safety. The polished bolt is numbered to the gun. The sporting type straight comb pistol grip stock has checkering, sling swivels and a solid Winchester recoil pad.
