The lot features an original authentic fenestrated carved shell gorget attributed to the Eastern Woodlands Great Lakes Indians or the Mississippian Culture. The piece shows a fenestrated carved design in a traditional four quarters of the universe pattern and similar to the religious cross. The shell shows two ground drilled holes at the top to be used for attaching to a necklace or clothing. The gorget shows the appropriate patina and construction to be considered an early antique or ancient artifact. The piece is in good overall condition with age appropriate wear as shown. The piece measures 2.5" in diameter. Other examples of Fenestrated shell gorgets have sold at auction for as much as $11,407.50 at Tony Putty’s 2/25/2017 sale.
