Early American Fixed Blade Knife, by Clarenbach & Herder, Phila., 8'' clip-point blade, 12-1/2'' overall, marked on ricasso ''CLARENBACH / & / HERDER, PHILADA''; nickel silver guard, checkered wood grips held in place by brass pins. Includes what appears to be a period brown leather sheath with grooved decoration to front side of body. We estimate this knife to be mfg'd mid-19th Century. Condition is very good overall. Blade shows signs of possible light cleaning, as well as dark spotting and a small amount of very fine pinprick imperfections to the surface. Nickel silver guard with moderate toning, trace amounts of verdigris are present, and fine pitting and impressions, in addition to two larger indentations to the left side. Grips with normal signs of age, use, and nice checkering. Tang with an overall dark patina. Body of sheath with an approx. 1-1/2'' long tear to both upper corners. In general, the knife and sheath show signs of age and use that you would expect from a knife of this time period. This maker is not often encountered. Est.: $1,000-$2,000.
