Early Ainsworth Inspected Colt Single Action Army Revolver, #926, .45 Colt cal., 7-1/2'' barrel, originally with blue and case-hardened finish, smooth walnut grips, ''US'' markings to left side of frame, correct Colt single-line barrel address. Markings show correct roll-die variation with partial breaks to the ''o'' in ''Co'', as well as an additional break in the ''a'' in Hartford. Correct early checkered pattern hammer, ''961'' assembly marking beneath triggerguard, with the interior of loading gate marked ''981''. Ainsworth ''A'' beneath triggerguard, cylinder, and top of backstrap, and ''P/A'' to bottom of barrel. Condition is good retaining an even overall etched cleaned patina. Case-hardened frame shows somewhat vivid case colors in protected areas, specifically the interior of the loading gate and forward flutes of frame. Faint case colors are visible at hammer but have mostly toned or silvered. Two-line patent dates are partially obscurred from etching or!
cleaning. Serial number to frame shows light to moderate knackering above numerals. Hammer screw and grip frame and triggerguard screws show moderate deformation. Grips show light scuffs, scratches and even wear, as well as fractional shrinkage. Early donut style ejector head may be a later replacement. Action is fairly crisp; bore, although dark, retains correct early lands and grooves. Est.: $6,000-$7,000.
