Image measures 8" x 5", mounted on beige cardstock with narrow border measuring 8 1/2" x 5 1/2". "Dodge's Bluff, Canon of Grand River, R.G.W. Rr C.R Savage, Sal Lake," printed near bottom edge of image. Contrast is medium, with much of the image extremely light. The focus is good. The image has some discoloration near the top edge and two small ridges near the top right. Otherwise, both the image and matte are extremely fine. The photographer, Charles R. Savage, was born in England, and died in Salt Lake City in 1909. After becoming a Latter Day Saint, he crossed the plains to Utah c1860. Savage photographed the streets of Salt Lake City, scenes throughout UT, and befirended Carlton E. Watkins prior to traveling to New York City. After outfitting a traveling photo wagon and returning to UT, he was invited to the celebration of the Joining of the Rails at Promontory, 1869, and took the first photos of what later became Zion National Park [Mautz, 1977, p. 489].
