Sphere with Spheres in Black, 2017
Baltic birch plywood, brass, paint
6 x 5.5 x 5.5 inches | 15.24 x 13.97 x 13.97 cm

A sphere is surely a simple object - all points on the surface being equidistant from its center - but the inside may be more complicated than expected.
This sphere is made of layers which can be rearranged to reveal a trio of interior spheres. This object was designed as a 3-dimensional model of a spherical shell with three interior spheres cut away by the intersection of an exterior phantom sphere.

The model was then sliced into layers based on the thickness of 3 millimeter birch plywood stock. Each layer was cut on my home-built ornamental turning machine, painted black, and stacked on a central rod to make the opened sphere.

The upper layers are not fixed but can be rotated to form a variety of views exposing the internal structure.

About the Artist:

Educated in engineering, Dewey Garrett took up the wood lathe in order to develop general woodworking skills for cabinetry and furniture. He found the process so stimulating and challenging that wood-turning has become a dedicated creative pursuit. He is a self-taught turner, and makes and modifies his tools to create unique turnings. His work is an ongoing exploration of the structure of forms constrained by the symmetry and simplicity of a lathe.
