Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1892. The rifle has a blue barrel and magazine with casehardened forearm tip, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate. The stock and forearm are black walnut with a varnish finish. The rifle is accompanied by a Winchester Museum letter. The letter describes rifle serial number 69905 as caliber 50-110 with octagon barrel and plain trigger. The letter indicates that the rifle was returned to the factory in 1893, 1897 and 1906 for modification or repair. The copy of the letter is only partially legible and the specific work performed on the rifle cannot be identified. The rifle is fitted with a dovetail mounted Beach combination globe and post front sight and three-leaf Winchester Express rear sight with platinum sighting line. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE- / - WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.- ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "50EX." is stamped on the top barrel flat immediately ahead of the receiver. "-MODEL 1886-" is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang. The two-line patent 1884 and 1885 patent dates and the serial number "69905" are located on the underside of the receiver.
BBL: 26 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 50-110
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 69905
Condition: Fine. The rifle retains 85% of the original blue finish on the barrel and magazine; there is some edge wear on the barrel and the finish on the underside of the magazine is thin. The case colors on the forearm tip, receiver and crescent buttplate have faded to a smooth and very attractive silver-gray patina. The receiver has a smooth attractive silver finish with traces of the original case colors on protected portions of the tang. The hammer and loading lever retain about 20% of the original case colors. The bolt retains nearly all of the original blue finish. The markings on the barrel and receiver tangs are crisp. The stock and forearm are very good overall, with a few minor handling marks. The stock retains about 60% or the original varnish finish while the forearm shows slightly more handling wear. This a very good example of a Model 1886 Winchester Sporting Rifle chambered for the desirable .50 Caliber Winchester Express cartridge.
