The lot features a Crow Native American Indian war shield said by the current collector to be from the previous collection of noted author Dr. Colin Taylor of England. The shield was sold to the current collector by Dr. Colin Taylor in the early 200’s. The shield shows a construction of thick Great American Bison Buffalo hide wetted and stretched over a bent wood frame. The shield measures 19.25” in diameter and appears to be in good condition. Taylor recalled that he had bought the piece in the 1960’s at Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in western North Dakota. The shield has old painted linear designs and a thick section of old Buffalo hair or fur still attached to the hide, old feathers, a single black bear claw and an old duck carcass tied on. The duck is quite dry and old, currently being in a fragile state. The piece appears to have its original shoulder strap still attached. The piece is painted in old pigment mineral dyes of blue, red, black and yellow. Other 19th Century Crow shields have been documented with bird carcasses attached, including a few shows in Taylor’s books.
