One of the great things about collecting is getting a collection that tells a complete story. The Gold Box Mining Company was incorporated on September 15, 1937. This collection starts with a stock certificate for 2,000 shares to Walter Fitzgerald dated September 27, 1939. Shares are 5c each. Nice Underground mining vignette. Excellent condition except for a few pin holes. Issued 12 days after the company was incorporated. There are 11 period black and white photographs of the men working, the exterior of the mine and the countryside in which the mine was located. Several newspaper articles from local newspapers tell the story of the excitement of Box Canyon (where the Gold Box was located). Texas Oil Magnate, H. L. Hunt had just purchased the Jungo Gold Mine from the Austin Family and it seems to have created quite a stir. One title claims "Rich Ore may Rival Austin Jumbo Mine." Fitzgerald, Garnier and Taylor are mentioned as owners of one of the mines in Box Canyon. Several other newspapers may provide more insight into the mine? ALso included are 12 statement of wages. Owner Fitzgerald made $65.00 from February 16 -28. The local papers (not in collection) reported that two shifts of men were working the Blackjack Mine (of the Gold Box Mining Company) in November of 1937. They made their very first shipment of very good gold ore in June of 1938 (the 'very good' was the words of a newspaper, again found online.) The mine would be leased out in 1938.

Other items pertain directly to Walter Fitzgerald. The most interesting is a letter from Paul Nelson in July of 1938. He says he would love to go in on a mine with Fitzgerald, but has no money. He will begin working with the W. P. A. next week. He does suggest a good mill man with a pick-up truck that might be a good hire. It is mailed from Imlay and has a "Ogden & S. F. R. P. O. cancel. There is a letter from Salt Lake City from the money man behind the company. He is sending a stope car, etc. Fitzgerald's car registration for a Buick Coach is included. The earliest record I can find about Walter Fitzgerald is when he and partner Garner leased a mine at Rabbit Hole (50 miles north of Lovelock). He can be found mining throughout Nevada for decades!
