Colt Whitneyville-Hartford Transition Dragoon Revolver, #1299, .44 ball., 7-1/2'' barrel, originally blue and case-hardened finish, smooth walnut grips, silver-plated triggerguard and backstrap. This 2nd Type Transitional Model utilizes the standard 1st Model Dragoon square frame and Walker type gripstrap; Walker style grips with lower portion of triggerguard that slants back into the grip. Frame of 1st Model Dragoon style having trigger and cylinder bolt screws drilled and extending thru the right side. Left side of frame has ''US'' partial stamping directly below ''Colt's Patent'' marking in typical early small letters. Wide Walker-style squareback triggerguard having serial number split in two by front screw. Short Walker-type steel trigger and ''V''-type steel mainspring. All matching serial numbers, with 299 on barrel wedge and underside of cylinder arbor; full number on cylinder. Top of barrel marked ''-Address Sam'l Colt New-York City-''. Tapered brass fro!
nt sight appears to be a period replacement. One of approx. 240 made in late 1847, more than four times rarer than a Walker, in correct serial number range, one of the very first guns produced at Colt's New Hartford factory. Condition is fine to excellent for this type of early military Colt, showing 10-20% original toning finish, crisp edges, sharp markings and address. Little remains of the original fragile cylinder scene. Made from original cutdown Walker parts with shortened barrel, barrel lug and cylinder, and very slightly modified Walker triggerguard. Original grips show wear, light refinishing, and overall fractional shrinkage. Single safety pin is present but flat, touch holes are clear, original 8-groove rifling is present, bore is fair, knackering to bolt stop screw. An excellent and original 2nd Type Whitneyville-Hartford Transition Dragoon. Est.: $40,000-$60,000.
