Colt Model 1860 Richards-Mason Centerfire Conversion Revolver
Manufactured in 1877, less than 1200 Model 1860 Richards-Mason revolvers are estimated to have been produced, making it one of the scarcest Colt cartridge conversion revolvers. Equipped with the distinctive breech plate with cut-away top and no rear sight, hammer with slotted face and riveted firing pin and barrel with distinctive "S" contour. The face of the ejector rod head has concentric rings. The revolver has a blued barrel, ejector assembly, cylinder and backstrap. The frame and hammer have a casehardened finish. The trigger guard is nickel plated and the one-piece grips have a high-gloss varnish finish. The top of the barrel is marked: "COLT'S PT. F.A MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A." in one line reading toward the breech, the barrel is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy scene and the "two July" patent marks are located on the left side of the frame. Matching numbers on the barrel, frame, cylinder trigger guard and backstrap. Smooth one piece grips.

Condition: Fine, with 40% of the slightly faded original finish, with a smooth gray patina on the barrel and ejector housing, a gray-brown patina on the forward portion of the cylinder and on the grip straps. Some pitting and dents, with strong original finish in the protected areas. The casehardened finish has faded but traces of the case colors are visible on the frame and sides of the hammer. Nearly 95% of the nickel remains on the trigger guard, with some light handling wear. The butt shows wear typical of use as a hammer, with lighter dents and varnish loss on the sides. Mechanically very good. A very good and completely original example of one of the more sought after Colt cartridge conversion revolvers.
