Unique Provincial New Hampshire April 3, 1742 redated 1743 / February 1744 Large Format Genuine Colonial Note
Province of New Hampshire. April 3, 1742, redated 1743 and 1744. Large Size Format. Ten Shillings (Forty Shillings Old Tenor). Genuine. Conservation with restoration. Very Fine.
Fr. NH-64. Unique. This exceedingly rare Ten Shillings denomination is of the highest rarity, being Unique to our best knowledge. The current note has similar engraved characteristics to the Newman plate on page 233 called a Contemporary Counterfeit, as well as to the note illustrated on page 234, there described as a Genuine note. The paper, style of engraving and quality of manufacture all appear as on the Genuine note, illustrated on page 234. This example is the Sole and Only Ten Shillings note known to our best knowledge. It was not represented in the May of 2004 Boyd/John J. Ford, Jr. Collection Sale, which remarkably offered four other notes on this issue, including: 1 Shilling, graded Very Fine selling at $16,100; a Counterfeit 2 Shillings 6 Pence graded Very Fine, selling at $6,612; a 6 Shillings (Backed) graded Fine, selling at $8,912; and a 20s graded Very Fine, selling for $8,050.

This current note was offered thirty years ago in 1987, purchased then Ex: (EAHA) The San Diego Show, Inc. Auction, September of 1987, Lot 2254. There are some deft restorations and also conservation to the folds and some restoration to the centerfold area. This note has a whole, solid and complete appearance having the overall eye appeal of Very Fine. There is boldness to the black printed text and designs upon the fine quality early laid period paper. The bottom margin is slightly trimmed touching into the bottom of the seal and final signature. Signers include; John Macmurphy, John Sandburn and Joseph Sherburne.

It is fair to state that this historic April 3, 1742 redated 1743/February 1744 New Hampshire Currency note is missing in every collection. This Ten Shillings denomination is not available to collectors other that the example being offered. A truly “Unique” opportunity!
