Exceedingly Rare North Carolina Note December 29, 1785 Six Pence “Thirteen Stars” Vignette First We Have Offered

North Carolina. December 29, 1785. Six Pence. “Thirteen Stars” vignette. Centerfold restored. PASS-CO graded Very Fine-20.

Fr. NC-208. This historically important North Carolina note is one of perhaps two or three known to exist. It is exceedingly rare as such, and quite extraordinary to locate in this whole and solid quality. The centerfold has a deft repair to a split, the reverse is somewhat more heavily soiled from circulation that the face. The top and left margins are tight while the bottom and right sides margins are huge on the face side, as this note was obviously cut from its sheet from the very well centered reverse side.
A design feature that is absolutely Unique to this Six Pence note, is the historic circle of “Thirteen Stars” being used for the vignette design at obverse lower right. The Stars are in a circle, much as the Thirteen links representing the original Thirteen American Colonies, as also found on the 1776 Continental Dollar, 1776 Continental Congress “Fugio” note, as well as the 1787 “Fugio” Cent reverse.
A second Unique feature is the square text design surrounding the Stars. This pattern reads, “- Six pence - Currency - Death to - Counterfeit -.” Certainly, an American note destined to be worth into six figures in the future. This December 29, 1785 Six Pence note with its “Thirteen Stars” vignette design, is the Sole Example of this great numismatic and North Carolina Colonial Currency rarity, that we have ever offered over the three and one half decades of specializing in this collecting field at Early American.
