(Walt Disney Pictures, 1940) Wanting to create the darkest and most purely evil character imaginable for the “Night on Bald Mountain” sequence in his only animated film created almost exclusively for adults, Fantasia, Walt Disney hired Bela Lugosi to model for the look, mannerisms, and movements of “Chernabog”, based on the Slavic black god of similar name. In fact, Disney later refers to this character as “Satan himself” for the TV debut of this sequence. Though the rotoscoped actions of Lugosi performing for sequence director Wilfred Jackson and head animator Bill Tytla do not seem to have survived, Lugosi’s facial features and idiosyncratic poses are unmistakable in these original animator’s sketches for cel creation. Pencil and colored pencil on (4) 12.25 x 15.5” and (1) 10 x 12” registration-punched animator’s illustration paper, all in Very Fine condition.
