Collection of 22 “Screwballs” puppets from Tulips Shall Grow and Bravo, Mr. Strauss. (Paramount, 1942) One of the most identifiable of George Pal’s Puppetoons puppets are the “Screwballs” from the Oscar-nominated Best Short Subject Cartoon, Tulips Shall Grow, and also seen in Bravo, Mr. Strauss (1943). Set during the height of World War II, this animated anti-Nazi propaganda film depicts the tenacity of the human spirit set amongst the brutality of mechanized warfare. Constructed of wood and hand-painted to resemble weathered metal, the 22 puppets feature various goose-stepping leg positions and multicolor belts of thin metal. The diving helmet worn by Mr. Strauss in Bravo is also present when he leads the marching soldiers through the water and they seize up and rust. In addition, there are 20+ Jan heads of various facial expressions from Tulips Shall Grow. Despite being over 65 years old, the puppets remain in excellent condition.
