This is an early Civil War 1862 dated example of a Springfield Armory 1861 pattern rifle-musket, the primary Civil War musket as used by the Union forces. The lock plate has the standard "eagle/shield" and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" markings ahead of the hammer and is dated "1862" behind it. The "P" is the only marking faintly visible at the breech and the tang date has been buffed off. Mounted with a full oil finished walnut stock with no visible cartouches on the left flat. The musket has a two leaf folding rear sight and a tulip head steel ramrod with swollen shank.
BBL: 40 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 58 percussion
Finish: bright
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Fair as period cleaned on the once bright metal with heavy pitting at the breech, which has been heavily cleaned. There is a smooth gray patina on the balance of the metal surfaces. The stock has had a coat of varnish applied some time ago and remains fair with 2 1/2" sliver on the ramrod channel and overall some scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The lock markings are clear. The action is very good.
