Manufactured by H. Merrill of Baltimore, Maryland with a total production of approximately 14,500. This is a single shot breech loading carbine loaded by lifting up and pulling back on the breech lever. This particular carbine is a First Type variation with the lock marked with the serial number behind the hammer and "J.H. MERRILL BALTO/PAT. JULY 1858/APL. 9 MAY 21-26-61" in front of the hammer. The top of the breech lever is marked "J.H. MERRILL BALTO/PAT. JULY 1858" opposite the bolster and the matching serial number at the rear. Blade front sight, three leaf folding rear sight, single brass barrel band, blue barrel with casehardened breech lock and breech lever, and mounted with a one-piece, smooth, straight grip stock with sharply tapered forend, saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left side stock flat, boxed cartouche on the left flat, brass patch box and carbine buttplate. Merrill carbines were issued to Union cavalry regiments in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Indiana, Wisconsin and Kentucky.

Condition: Very good as refinished with half of applied brown finish remaining overall. The slightly undersized stock is fine with crisp edges. The cartouche is faint. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
