Included in this lot for bidding is a very fine condition, Civil War production Colt 1849 Pocket Revolver, .31 caliber, with rare 6-shot cylinder (most of production were 5-shot), four inch barrel, serial number 256597, made during the midst of the Civil War in 1864. This model was popular with an array of frontier individuals, Civil War soldiers seeking a small “last ditch” personal weapon, urban gentlemen and ladies who wanted the finest firearm available for personal protection and easy concealment, travelers etc. This is a particularly fine condition example with all serial numbers matching on the butt, loading lever, trigger guard, frame, barrel, cylinder and even the frame wedge (these almost always replaced or mismatched). The one piece walnut grips retain most of their high finish varnish. The matching cylinder shows a very nice and complete roll engraved stagecoach holdup scene! The mellow mustard color brass grip frame and trigger guard do not appear to have ever been cleaned or polished and the upper left side is clearly and correctly stamped “31 CAL” while the frame on this side is also correctly marked “COLT’S PATENT.” The octagon barrel retains nice original aged patina and is correctly marked on top “ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW-YORK U. S. AMERICA.” Aside from the excellent roll marked scene, the cylinder is also correctly marked “COLT’S PATENT” with the serial number underneath. Tight and excellent action with all parts original and showing no signs of abuse or cleaning. An outstanding totally original and all matching early Colt worthy of the finest collection. The firearm qualifies as an Antique Hand Gun, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 256597.
